Top 5: Videos About Gen Y

By Ethan Lyon, Senior Writer

Ever wonder how to capture a Gen Y’er in their natural habitat? Or, curious about how much influence Gen Y carries? This week we share entertaining, yet informative videos that explore the up-and-coming generation.

We have intentionally bypassed the many TV segments that talk about Gen Y as a selfish, “I do what I want” generation. We have chosen realistic videos that take a different perspective and follow the thinking behind our previous posts about Gen Y.

To give you the scope of Gen Y influence we start big picture with Socialnomics video, “The Social Media Revolution.” Then we delve into a numbers game with Brian Syms. To get a marketing perspective, we tap into a B Net discussion panel with cross industry experts. To end this video series, we have two fun videos about Gen Y.

1. The Social Media Revolution

By 2010, Generation Y will outnumber Baby Boomers, reports Socialnomics. Author of this video, Socialnomics reveals startling statistics concerning social media. No longer is it a steadily rising trend, it is rocketing out of the atmosphere. Socialnomics takes a look at the big picture to put the entire social landscape into focus.

2. Reaching Gen Y

“There is no silver bullet,” says Brian Syms. Brian deconstructs Gen Y through numbers and takes a realistic look at the complexities of the up-and-comers.

3. Unlocking the Millennial Market

Brought to you by B Net, this video is unlike other commentary about Gen Y. Josh Hannah, the General Partner from Matrix Partners, touches on media consumption behaviors of Gen Y. Confessing his inability to really be “in the know,” he explores the generational gap between Gen Y and their parents. He differentiates characteristics between generations and the generalities of all youth.

4. “I Love You”

Inspired by the Mac ads, this spoof illustrates some of the personality traits of Gen Y as it contrasts with Boomers. Described as “touchy feely” and more casual, this ad about credit unions showcases the disparity between Gen Y and their parents.

5. How to Capture the North American Gen Y’er

This video takes aim at the many generalities and suppositions about Generation Y in a light-hearted way. It examines the burgeoning generation as if they were animals to be studied. Taking the word “capture” into a different context makes for a funny, yet informative video.
